Hooray! Spring has finally sprung! You know what that means? It's time to bust out the grill. These perfectly grilled barbecue pork ribs are going to be your new favorite thing.
My hubby takes grilling pretty seriously. In fact, we have 4 outdoor grills right now. He loves to talk about direct and indirect heat, how you need to fan the charcoal, and how to get that perfect smoky flavor.
Guess what? Grilling really isn't all that hard. I'll admit that up until this year, I've left manning the grill up to the hubster. I was intimidated. Especially since we no longer use propane and only use a charcoal grill. Fortunately with a few helpful tips and tricks even an amateur can master some perfectly grilled barbecue pork ribs. Plus Smithfield Extra Tender Fresh Pork is so tender and juicy, anyone can grill these with confidence.
I decided to pick up 2 different types of the Smithfield Extra Tender Ribs on my latest shopping trip to Walmart - Smithfield Extra Tender St. Louis Ribs and Smithfield Extra Tender Spare Ribs.
Before I put my ribs on the grill, I like to slow cook them in the oven first. For these ribs I lined a roasting pan with foil and coated the ribs with a little olive oil, salt and pepper. Then I stuck them in the oven at 300 degrees for 2 hours. While waiting for the ribs to slow cook, I made my barbecue sauce.
This barbecue sauce has tomato paste, honey, garlic powder, apple cider vinegar, wostershire sauce ground mustard, and chili powder. Yum!
Once the ribs were out of the oven and the sauce was made, it was time to light up the grill. Here are a few things to keep in mind when using charcoal:
- don't use too much
- wait for your charcoal to ash over
- make sure the grill is not too hot before adding your meat
The sound of the sizzle when you add your ribs to the grill is one of my favorites.
I love brushing yummy barbecue sauce onto these juicy ribs.
After the barbecue sauce has had a chance to really glaze the ribs it's time to eat!
Perfectly tender and juicy, these ribs were so finger lickin' good that even my super picky toddler loved them.

- 1 package Smithfield Extra Tender Pork Ribs
- 1 6 oz. can tomato paste
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 4 TBSP apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp ground mustard
- 1 tsp wostershire sauce
- 1 tsp salt
- olive oil to taste
- pepper to taste
- salt to taste
- Preheat your oven to 275 degrees
- Line a baking pan with foil. Place the ribs into the pan and coat with a small amount of olive oil, salt, and pepper.
- Cook the ribs for 2 hours
- Meanwhile, make the barbecue sauce by combing remaining ingredients into a pot over medium heat stirring frequently.
- Once the ribs are cooked and the barbecue sauce is made, heat a charcoal grill.
- Sear the ribs and brush on the barbecue sauce. (about 7 minutes)
- Flip the ribs and brush the the other side.
- Close the lid of the grill to allow for a more smokey flavor.
- Remove the ribs from the grill and cut up into individual pieces.
- Serve with remaining barbecue sauce
